SCREENPLAY COMPETITION
Judging the works of so many talented writers is truly hard. In the end our judges have to assign numeric scores in multiple categories to each screenplay and these scores are tallied up. So you may miss being included in the list of winners below by very few points but this is how competitions work.
Congratulations to this year’s winners!
Richard Spong
Terry Luke Podnar
An ambitious businessman, who is haunted by an abusive foster home, struggles with his past while desperately climbing the corporate ladder by using his co-workers as stepping stones - pushing him into a spiraling mental breakdown.
First Prize
Israela Margalit
This is the tale of a young pianist with big dreams, whose quest for glory and fulfillment brings her up against intrigue, sexual harassment, and the tough realities of building a career in a cutthroat world. A drama wrapped in a comedy, with easy-on-the-ear music, it's a story for everybody — especially for women who try to balance ambition, love, independence, and tradition. Essentially a director’s piece, the screenplay offers brilliant roles for actors 25-60.
A Spider Sat Beside Her
K.E. Elaine Lanning
A terrorist attack on the space station embroils a young scientist, Lowry Walker, into a political nightmare. In a world drowned by rising seas, territorial battles erupt across the globe, with strong governments stealing land from the weak. And Lowry is the inconvenient witness...
Outstanding Achievement
(in alphabetical order by title)
Ghost Town, NM
Lynn H. Elliott
“Ghost Town, NM” is a romantic comedy in which a young girl, in order to avoid an arranged marriage, escapes with a boyfriend to a ghost town.
A motley band pursues them: the young woman’s father, convinced that ghostly serial killers still inhabit the place, a video recordist who sees ghosts through his camera, and a D&D fanatic who cannot distinguish truth from fiction.
And then there are the host of characters who inhabit the ghost town: an aged hippie who worships The Great Saguaro Cactus; ghostly painted Ladies living in the Sassy Ladies Cat House; gunslingers; and many more! All occupy a place in which reality and imagination merge.
Somehow, in this cocktail mix of the Bard’s plots, incompetent investigators, and the ghost town’s inhabitants (real and imaginary), all’s well that eventually ends well.
L-8
Gillian Rabin
Set in a not-so-distant future where period tracking is state-mandated, abortion is now punishable by death, and reporting abortion suspicions is a lucrative way to earn cash, a young woman follows the cascade of coverage on Texas’ first death-penalty case from the solitude of her bathroom. After falling in love, our girl's cyclical life is abruptly jeopardized as she tries to outsmart the system using an unwilling and potentially deadly source: her own mother.
Love, Friendship, and Synchronicity
Anthony Marinelli
Sometimes what you think is an end, is really a middle. The lives of six people intertwine in a story about how it's never too late to make a fresh start and to never lose sight of the possibility that things do happen for a reason.
