Raising The Money: Crowdfunding Tips

Jayce BartokJayce Bartok began his career most notably as Pony in Richard Linklater’s Suburbia. He was inspired to write and star in The Cake Eaters directed by Mary Stuart Masterson, and starring Kristen Stewart. He just completed production on his crowdfunded directorial debut, Fall to Rise.  His credits include director of Altered By Elvis, and the short films Sunburn, Jack and Paul (screening at WILLiFEST this year), Stricken, and most recently, he produced, Suddenly, starring Terry Kinney. He was the recipient of The Frontier Filmmaker Award for his feature Fall To Rise.  Next, he will direct his true-crime thriller, Red River, starring Patrica Arquette. Website: www.jaycebartok.com

Rob FortunatoRob Fortunato is a Brooklyn based filmmaker from Cherry Hill, NJ. His second short film "Loretta" which was crowdfunded will be making its world premiere at the Williamsburg International Film Festival. Rob is inspired by the human experience, and hopes to create films that his audience can connect to on an honest and emotional level.

Felicia LinFelicia Lin is a Taiwanese American writer. Currently she has two book projects underway: the biography of Su Beng, a revolutionary, activist and historian and a romantic comedy novel called Metropolicks. In October of 2013 she launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $15,000 to fund a trip back to Taiwan to shoot additional footage for a documentary about Su Beng and to do research needed for the biography. Billy ChrissochosBilly Chrissochos is the founder of Porphyra (formerly Phoenix Reign), an eclectic, modern Rock band incorporating Hard Rock and Symphonic Metal with Greek folk, punk, progressive and classical textures. He just successfully completed the band’s first crowdfunding campaign for Porphyra’s new album “Faith, Struggle, Victory”. Billy is also an active member in his community, serves in the Cultural Committee of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater NY, is President of the Greek Artists Guild and VP of the Hellenic American Center of the Arts which helps organize Greek themed classical, opera, rock and heavy metal performances. Billy has striven to merge Rock and Heavy Metal with Greek music all his life and is truly a pioneer in this. He is an artist, graphic designer, photographer, video editor, event organizer, and more.

Anthony ArkinSon of famed actor Alan Arkin, Anthony Arkin has over thirty years of acting experience and has performed in just about every dramatic medium. He has worked in theater since '89, notably in the hit off-Broadway show, "Power Plays," Kenny Lonnergan's "Waverly Gallery" and Broadway's last production of "I'm Not Rappaport." Film credits include "Two Family House," "Neal Cassady," "Revolution #9," "Samuel Beckett is Coming Soon," and two Woody Allen films, "Hollywood Ending" and "Anything Else."
He is also a successful filmmaker and editor. In 2003 he started N7Films to direct the feature documentary, "STATE OF ROCK", which he also edited and for which he won the prize for editing at the 2008 Santa Fe Film Festival.
Currently he is working on creating the web-series "Bring the Blood," based on characters from his as yet unproduced screenplay, "Meet the Ghouls." He is also developing two other projects: a feature film called "The Daymakers" and an untitled mystery web series.

Jim JermanokJim Jermanok is an award-winning writer, director and producer, creative success expert, consultant and speaker. Jim wrote and produced the sophisticated romantic comedy, “Passionada,” which was released by Columbia Tri Star in over 150 countries. His latest film “Em” recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival and the Criterion International Inspiration Award. It was released last year by Vanguard Cinema and SnagFilms. He is also active in theater, TV and New Media.  Jermanok is a former ICM Agent who helped to represent Arthur Miller, Shirley MacLaine, Dudley Moore, Helen Hayes, Alan Arkin and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, among others.  Jim also speaks and conducts workshops worldwide on the subject of his upcoming 2015 book, BEYOND THE CRAFT: What You Need to Know to Make A Living Creatively, as well as Successful Film Producing and Financing and The Art and Business of Screenwriting.

Stella McGovernPanel sponsor, Crowdzu will be represented by Stella McGovern. After several years of working in technology in hardware support and as a client/server application developer,  followed by stints in marketing and as a brick & mortar business owner, she decided to follow through on her entrepreneurial instincts and co-founded Crowdzu. She has also been a core team member of WILLiFEST since its inception.


Crowdzu will be the first-of-its-kind marketplace with nine separate but interconnected verticals that will help create and foster a creative community.

  • Users will be able to:
    1. raise money for their projects via a curated rewards-based crowdfunding vertical, and
    2. crowdsource design, photos, music, video, and fashion services from creative members
  • Creative service providers will have additional opportunities to monetize their talents via the jobs and market verticals
  • Filmmakers will be able to generate additional revenue through product placement deals arranged via the brands vertical

The crowdfunding vertical is now live. The design vertical will launch next.

Lande Yoosuf is a television industry professional with several years of experience in development, casting and production at numerous networks including MTV, NBC, Discovery, WE-TV and Bravo to name a few. She oversees all aspects of casting and production at One Scribe Media (onescribemedia.com) with a strong emphasis on story composition. She also holds workshops and provides pitch consulting services.

Brian Wade aka DJ Stereotype (djstereotypemusic.com) is a film maker, actor, published writer and musician. In 2004, he founded Surburban Underground, a production company that produces a late night variety show by the same name. Surburban Underground has aired on GSTV and PeopleTV in Atlanta, and currently airs on Brooklyn Public Network. As a VJ Brian has interviewed the likes of OutKast, Tyler Perry and Janelle Monae just to name a few. Brian has also written a feature length screenplay, Colours, that has been produced as an Off Broadway play and is currently being produced for the screen (coloursfilm.wix.com/coloursfilm).

Eve Pomerance is co-founder of Major Motion Pictures, LLC. Founded in 2009 with Jonathan and Erez Mossek to produce "As Good As Dead," she also Executive Produced and cast "Festival of Light" which starred Aidan Quinn and Jimi Mistry. In 2015, Eve is slated to produce "Sleeping Shepherd," written and directed by Frank Hudec, starring: Michael Pitt, Isabelle Hupper, Jeremy Irons and Rutger Hauer; and "Son of the South" with director Barry Alexander Brown, and producers Stephen Nemeth and Spike Lee. Eve recently cast "Pilgrims" for Ric Burns (PBS), "Tim Maia," and "Dreaming Against The World" for Academy Nominated Tim Sternberg. In addition to the film work Eve has cast two video games for Sony: "Until Dawn" and "Silent Hill."

Wendy McKenzie (inthewinkofaneye.biz) is a former model/dancer turned Casting Director with over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry. As the lead New York Casting Director for the film "Notorious," she was lauded for finding and introducing Jamal "Gravy" Woolard for the title role of Notorious BIG. Her client list includes Fox Searchlight Pictures, MTV, BET, SNL, G-Unit Clothing and ooVoo. Wendy has cast actors, dancers and models for numerous films, tours, print ads and music videos for artists like Mariah, Carey, Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Lopez.

Ariana Bernstein is a Brooklyn-based film producer, screenwriter and actor. Ariana has worked with and learned from some of the leaders in Independent Film, including Alex Orlovsky (Half Nelson, Blue Valentine), Azazel Jacobs (Momma's Man, Terri) and Mary Jordan (Jack Smith and The Destruction of Atlantis). In television, Ariana worked as Amy Herzig's assistant at CBS Casting where she learned the craft of casting on such long-running shows as How I Met Your Mother and Criminal Minds. Ariana is preparing for her first theatrical release with "Delusions of Guinevere" (Actor, Producer, Co-Writer) and her second theatrical release "Ft. Tilden" (Executive Producer).

Tracey MooreTracey Moore has cast for feature films and the Fox show New York Undercover. Her commercial credits include; Nike, Sprite, Coca-Cola, New York Times, Miller Lite, Pontiac, and Taco Bell.



Justin LordJustin Lord's dynamic and diverse career has spanned stage, television, film and music.




Joanna White OldhamThis event is being moderated by Adult Learning Specialist, Joanna White-Oldham, founder of Center for Active Learning. Joanna, who has worked in education for almost thirteen years, is an advocate of informal learning opportunities for adult learners, and believes in making higher education accessible for everyone. Joanna has also been a producer at Brooklyn Public Network for eleven years. Her current project, "Chronic Visibility: Celebrating the Survivor," currently airs on Wednesday afternoons at 2 pm.

The Center for Active Learning provides a selection of programs designed to meet the varied needs of diverse learning styles. All programs are grounded in educational theory, and incorporate active learning methodologies.
